Though exploring dark motifs is nothing novel for a band like Cage the Elephant, divorce is a new topic for Shultz. Now that Cage the Elephant have the status that they do, it would be interesting to see them take more risks, but Social Cues may be their safest record yet.
They have released five studio albums to date, each of which to commercial sucess. Below is a compiled list of all five albums ranked from best to worst describing strengths, weaknesses and everything in between. Apart from the three song string that starts the album, there is just not too much of interest going on here. The Cage the Elephant sound is almost completely gone and has been replaced by over-mixed and over-simplified songs. The garage rock sound is gone, along with a lot of the angst, and power which fans dearly missed.
This record certainly has its moments such as the groovy Ready to Let Go, or the powerhouse of a track Broken Boy. Broken Boy, has the power of the early days, with the later era bits of experimentation producing a fast paced, gritty opening track with some catchy guitars. The following year, they released a fantastic version Broken Boy featuring Detroit rock legend Iggy Pop. Although it has its highlights, this record does not hold its own to its predecessors, and was a bit of a let down for listeners. Innovation, and experimentation are good, it just did not work out too well this time. This album has a sound much similar to their self-titled debut album than Melophobia, which was released two years later.
This song is the loveliest moment on the recording. This outlook is surprising when understood in relation to the emotional beating Shultz has taken with the end of his marriage. It is a refreshing and inspired decision and another worthy track. This moment produces an evocative emotional release before the album draws to a close.
There is not a whole lot of progression on the release that will move the band forward but it is an enjoyable outing loaded with numerous hooks and ear candy. My fear is that it could all get old fast. Maybe being able to simply tread water was an accomplishment for the band at this stage?

Cage the Elephant Unveil New Song ‘Mess Around’
After meeting him at an event, Cage The Elephant sent the track his way and within 24-48 hours , Beck had already added two rap verses and sent it back.
This song is one of the more experimental tracks on the album. At a time when many artists are experimenting with completely new unique soundscapes, it is a refreshing reminder that although time passes and trends in music change, there are bands still willing to expand upon the sound that their fans are familiar with.
This casts a looming darkness over the entire record. He remains calm and wishes the best for his partner. While Cage the Elephant excels at the psychedelic sound, there are moments where it gets stale. Instead, he sings in a lower register. It fits the mood of the songs, but his wild, unchained vocals are sorely missed.
Favorite Tokyo Smoke. A lot of the songs here feel a bit bland with a few exceptions.
The lyrics, however, are outstanding, they save this album for me. You can tell Matt is really going through some shit on this album.

It takes a rare kind of act to be able to play to mix playing stadium shows with Beck as well as ripping-up sweatboxes and headlining festivals but Cage The Elephant somehow manage it. That along with a softer verse, but a loud, wall of sound like chorus are often part of the formula for good music which the guys nailed on that track. The singles released of this album Shake Me Down, Aberdeen, Around My Head, and Always Something seemed to be the stronger tracks, unlike other Cage the Elephant albums, where the most interesting music you can find is on the b-sides. With that being said though, there still is plenty of solid songs worth adding to your indie playlists, such as the fast paced 2024, and the bass-powered and distortion-laced Sabertooth Tiger. An all around head-banging album with some songs that are a must to see live. Although a very diverse album musically, with songs of many different sounds on it, a lot of the angst and power of the early days is not quite at the forefront anymore. In the seven years, since their debut album, their sound has evolved to a more refined and polished sound lacking some of the power and raw energy of the early days.
The garage rock sound is brought to the front on tracks such as Mess Around featuring drums to the sound of Pat Carney of the Black Keys. Again, a very musically diverse album as can be heard in tracks such as Too Late To Say Goodbye which has a spacey sort of sound, not really available anywhere else in the Cage the Elephant discography, and to their credit, they nailed it. In that song, they experiment with slide guitar, layered vocals and orchestral cymbal rolls on the drums, all sounds not too familiar for them. Cold Cold Cold, utilizes a piano for the melody, as opposed to a guitar, and begins the song with some interesting drum licks. It is hard to attach a certain sound to this record, which again to their credit, is part of what makes it an interesting album, strong enough to win them a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2015.
Another possible reason for the shift is the increased popularity of the group that accompanied their fourth album. This song is one of the more experimental tracks on the album.
The Verdict: Cage the Elephant are one of the biggest bands in alternative rock right now. While their contemporaries Arctic Monkeys underwent a total reinvention with their loungey 2018 release and with Vampire Weekend offering an ambitious double LP this May, Cage the Elephant have offered a batch of all too generic radio-friendly singles.

There is plenty of in your face excitement on this record, emphasized in songs such as Indy Kidz, and Aberdeen. Shultz is belting out the lyrics in Aberdeen mixed with loud but catchy guitars by Lincoln Parish and the other Shultz brother Brad.
Structured around an irresistible riff and a groovy bassline that is reminiscent of all things Cage the Elephant, Schultz juxtaposes images of his bitter holiday with the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the unsuspecting people of Pompeii who were turned into statues of ash.
Directed by Matt Schultz himself, the surreal three-minute clip is full of unsettling images like lovers kissing while covered in blood, two girls hammering nails into their own hands, and a cult gathered in an underground tunnel in their underwear, preceded by Matt Schultz who bursts into song and dance in his tighty-whities! The second single from the album arrived on March 15 only to confirm that emotional turmoil is not going to hold Cage the Elephant back.
In an interview with iHeartRadio during Lollapalooza 2013, Matt Shultz revealed the title of the upcoming album. Melophobia was released on October 8, 2013, to largely positive reviews. The band toured with Muse as an opening act in the fall of 2013. On August 24, 2013, the band performed Melophobia in its entirety live at Soundcheck Nashville in front of an intimate audience of friends and family. Lincoln Parish left the band early in December 2013 to focus on his production company, TalkBoxRodeo. And then [Cage the Elephant] obviously took off and did more than what any of us could have expected. The Melophobia tour continued into 2014, including a stop at the Lollapalooza music festival on August 3.
