To support himself, he worked construction jobs. One day, while driving a brick truck, he heard a country singer featured on the local radio station KPHO. Robbins was convinced that he could do better. He drove right down to the station and earned a place on the show.
He landed a deal with Columbia Records in 1951, after a talent scout watched Robbins working in the studio on Western Caravan. The show was broadcast live every week out of Nashville, Tennessee. The record featured two of his most popular and enduring songs: "El Paso" and "Big Iron.
With a big, resonant voice and a flair for storytelling in the mode of his grandfather, Robbins continued to churn out chart-topping songs through the 1960s. He began in the early 1960s by racing stock cars on small dirt tracks. During this time, Robbins kept making music.
He suffered his third serious heart attack in early December. Despite undergoing surgery, Robbins died a few days later, on December 8, 1982, in a Nashville hospital.
About the time he was pulling his musical crossover coup, the opportunity for Marty to do a little film acting came up. The Badge of Marshal Brennan, not coincidentally a western, featured him in a supporting role, the first of several sidelines into acting over the coming years. Marty composed "She Was Only Seventeen," targeting teenage emotions once again before going down a new path, or I should say trail, that succeeded in spreading his music to the widest possible audience. Robbins and Don Law were careful not to overdo the "Old West" angle, riding into new territory when they felt the time was right. Marty and Don liked what they heard and released it as recorded while experimenting with ways to recreate the unusual effect. It eventually became the guitar technique known as "fuzz tone. Fascinated by NASCAR racing, Marty began hitting the track himself and raced professionally for the first time in 1966, continuing for many years. He had at least one serious accident but came back for more as soon as his injuries healed.
That same year, Marty began having chest pains and was hospitalized with three blocked arteries in his heart. He had a successful bypass surgery, still an experimental procedure at the time.
It was filmed entirely on location at Apacheland Movie Ranch. Robbins later portrayed a musician in the 1982 Clint Eastwood film Honkytonk Man. Robbins died a few weeks before the release of the film in December 1982 of complications following cardiac surgery. He was interred in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville.
The city of El Paso, Texas , later honored Robbins by naming a park and a recreational center after him. It was published in January 2007. Also in 1961, Robbins wrote the words and music and recorded "I Told the Brook," [10] a ballad later recorded by Billy Thorpe. Robbins was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.

It was also during his time in the Navy that Robbins made his first sustained efforts at songwriting, teaching himself to play the guitar during his free time. When he returned to home to Phoenix in 1946, he had set his heart on a career in show business.

Political views Marty Robbins was strongly conservative in his political views. He supported Barry Goldwater in his 1964 United States presidential election campaign as a southern director for "Stars for Barry". With his musical successes, he was able to finance his avocation. Robbins always tried to run at the big race tracks Talladega Superspeedway, Daytona International Speedway every year and a smattering of the smaller races when time permitted. They were painted two-toned magenta and chartreuse, usually carrying car number 42 though 6, 22, and 777 were also used. Over the years, he ran a few makes and models Plymouths, Dodges or Fords before buying a 1972-bodied Dodge Charger from Owens. Robbins had 6 top-ten finishes as well as a few major wrecks during the 1970s, and he had Owens rebuild the car to update the sheet metal to the 1973—1974 Charger specifications, and then finally 1978 Dodge Magnum sheet metal, which he raced until the end of 1980.
In 1972, at the Winston 500, Robbins stunned the competition by turning laps that were 15 mph faster than his qualifying time. He had knocked the NASCAR-mandated restrictors out of his carburetor and admitted he "just wanted to see what it was like to run up front for once. It charted to 6 on the all-genre Billboard 200, and was also certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. His final Top 10 single was "Honkytonk Man" from the 1982 eponymous film in which Robbins had a role. He died shortly before its release.
In 1956 he achieved another top hit with Singing the Blues , which stayed at the top of the country charts for thirteen weeks. Guy Mitchell dominated the pop market with the same title. The song he wrote himself, in which the Ray Conniff Singers participated, made it to the top of the country charts and to number two on the pop hit parade.
Robbins recorded a few more pop-oriented songs until he had his biggest hit in 1959 with the sentimental western song El Paso. The piece stayed at the top of the country charts for six weeks and earned him a Grammy in 1961. Robbins had thus ended his pop phase and in the following years mainly published Western songs, often with a Tex-Mex touch. Occasionally he went on excursions into Hawaiian music or jazz. During these years he took on small roles in western films for the first time. In 1962 he started racing, which soon became his great passion. The sales of his records decreased slightly, although he was still regularly represented in the top 10 and had a few number 1 hits.
He left Columbia Records in 1972 to begin a three-year stint at Decca later MCA Records; though he had some success there, he returned to Columbia in late 1975. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982, just two months before suffering his third heart attack he had also suffered heart attacks in 1969 and 1981. He underwent a quadruple bypass at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. His only posthumous country hit came in 1983, when he scored a No. BornSeptember 26, 1925.
