He drove right down to the station and earned a place on the show. He landed a deal with Columbia Records in 1951, after a talent scout watched Robbins working in the studio on Western Caravan. The show was broadcast live every week out of Nashville, Tennessee. The record featured two of his most popular and enduring songs: "El Paso" and "Big Iron. With a big, resonant voice and a flair for storytelling in the mode of his grandfather, Robbins continued to churn out chart-topping songs through the 1960s. He began in the early 1960s by racing stock cars on small dirt tracks. During this time, Robbins kept making music. He suffered his third serious heart attack in early December. Despite undergoing surgery, Robbins died a few days later, on December 8, 1982, in a Nashville hospital. He was 57 years old. Robbins was survived by his wife, Marizona; the pair had been married since 1948 and had two children together. Robbins enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in the history of country music.

The song he wrote himself, in which the Ray Conniff Singers participated, made it to the top of the country charts and to number two on the pop hit parade. Robbins recorded a few more pop-oriented songs until he had his biggest hit in 1959 with the sentimental western song El Paso. The piece stayed at the top of the country charts for six weeks and earned him a Grammy in 1961. Robbins had thus ended his pop phase and in the following years mainly published Western songs, often with a Tex-Mex touch. Occasionally he went on excursions into Hawaiian music or jazz.
During these years he took on small roles in western films for the first time. In 1962 he started racing, which soon became his great passion. The sales of his records decreased slightly, although he was still regularly represented in the top 10 and had a few number 1 hits. He still performed at the Opry every week.
There were also numerous stock car races.
He had at least one serious accident but came back for more as soon as his injuries healed. That same year, Marty began having chest pains and was hospitalized with three blocked arteries in his heart. He had a successful bypass surgery, still an experimental procedure at the time. While in the hospital, Marizona traveled some 50 miles round trip each day to bring him home-cooked meals far preferable to hospital food. The marriage, more than two decades strong, inspired him to write "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife," a 1970 hit that won him his second Grammy, as a writer this time, in the category of Best Country Song. Doctors recommended Robbins take it much easier in the future - advice he ignored. He went back to recording and performing live, including regular Opry appearances, and resumed his second career as a race car driver, with the same gusto as before.
Moving to Decca Records in 1972 the label changed to MCA soon after he was moderately successful, but it was his return to Columbia that reignited his career. He kicked things off with "El Paso City," fondly reminiscing about the original classic song in the lyrics. In June 1976 it became his first number one country hit in six years.

By the time his parents divorced in 1937, Martin had entered a rebellious phase; he dropped out of high school and joined the Navy at age 17, right in the thick of World War II. After the war, he began following his dreams of being a musician, calling himself Jack Robinson for a short time in an attempt to hide such goings-on from his disapproving mother. He brought in a couple of his buddies from Phoenix, guitarist Floyd Lanning and steel guitarist James Farmer, for that first go-around in Los Angeles, which also featured session guitarist and future country star Johnny Bond. Neither it nor the follow-up caught on. Marty insisted on writing his material and somehow, in spite of early failures, was allowed to do so; a June 1952 session in Dallas, Texas achieved better results. He was off and running. He enjoyed it so much that he moved his entire family wife and two young children to Nashville and became a regular on the Saturday broadcast.
Working with Columbia producer Don Law, he released mostly ballads perhaps pressured to do so and the label gave him a nickname he disliked from the start, "Mister Teardop. He became somehat unpredictable in song choices, often baffling label brass but with the full support of Law.
